ABOUT ME
For much of my life, I’ve been fascinated by connection.
Before becoming a coach and facilitator, I spent years as a professional musician and performer. Music taught me so much about emotional honesty, vulnerability, and the power of shared human experience. I became deeply drawn to the moments where people stop performing and something real begins to emerge — moments where people feel moved, understood, connected, or less alone.
I’ve also always had deeply meaningful friendships in my life. Some of the moments I’ve treasured most have been long conversations late into the night, sitting with someone in honesty and vulnerability, feeling the sense that we were truly meeting each other. Those experiences shaped me deeply and gave me a glimpse of what human connection could feel like at its best.
Over time, though, my curiosity about connection became deeply personal.
I went through enormous challenges in my own life including divorce, recovery from addiction, faith transformation, and a long process of self-discovery. During some of the darkest periods of my life, I realized I could no longer keep avoiding what I was feeling. I had to learn how to truly be with my emotions instead of escaping them. I had to learn how to stay present with grief, fear, uncertainty, loneliness, vulnerability, and relational pain without abandoning myself.
Around that time, I discovered Circling® through Guy Sengstock and The Circling Institute, and it changed my life.
When I first experienced Circling, it felt both deeply familiar and completely new at the same time. The quality of connection reminded me of the very best conversations I’d had with my closest friends, honest, emotionally present, vulnerable, alive. But what amazed me was that these kinds of connections were happening with people I had just met, and that they were happening reliably, almost every session.
It felt like discovering that the kind of connection I had always longed for wasn’t rare or accidental. It was something that could actually be practiced and cultivated.
Through years of immersive training, facilitation, and personal work, I began developing a completely different relationship with myself and others. I realized that most of us were never truly taught how to relate. We’re rarely taught how to stay connected while being honest, how to express what we really feel, how to navigate vulnerability, or how to listen in a way that helps another person feel deeply seen and understood.
My coaching practice grew directly out of this journey.
Today, I work with individuals, couples, therapists, coaches, facilitators, and leaders who want deeper, more meaningful relationships in both their personal and professional lives. Alongside my private coaching work, I’m also a co-founder of Colorado Connection Collective, where we create workshops, trainings, and in-person experiences devoted to authentic human connection and relational skill-building.
At the heart of all of my work is a simple belief:
Meaningful connection is something we can learn.
The ability to communicate honestly, stay present with emotion, listen deeply, and create relationships rooted in trust and authenticity are capacities that can be practiced and developed.
My work is not simply to help people communicate better.
It is to help people create relationships that feel more honest, alive, connected, and real — beginning with the relationship they have with themselves.

"Mat has an incredibly gracious presence. He knows when to be quiet so you can exist in a supportive space without having to work for it, and he knows how to say the precise words you need to know you’ve been deeply understood. Being coached by Mat is like getting a spiritual massage: He intuitively knows where to press gently to ease the pain and when to use a more delicate touch."

"After just one session with Mat, I walked away profoundly relaxed and so much closer to myself, with three crystal clear truths I really needed to see and hadn’t known I had buried. It wasn’t only the release of feeling my feelings, but a much deeper release that meant the untying of an existential knot that had been hurting for a long time. Now I am breathing so much easier, sleeping so much better, and so grateful to Mat for helping me know and love myself better. I am someone who has always struggled to feel safe or relaxed around people, and I can assure you, you are safe with Mat."
